Prompting Basics: How to Talk to AI So It Actually Helps

The most common reason people give up on AI is that they're prompting it like a search engine. Type "marketing tips," get generic mush. The fix isn't a better AI — it's a better prompt. These five habits work in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and every other tool.

1. Give it a role

Starting with a role focuses the entire answer:

Compare that to "explain input tax credit" — the role version is sharper, simpler, and aimed at the right reader.

2. Give context before the question

AI is only as good as what it knows about your situation. Front-load the context:

The more relevant detail you give, the more tailored the answer.

3. Specify the format you want
